Khyal Photoblogging

These were taken between 1985 and 1987, at various concerts in Pune, Mumbai, Miraj and Delhi. Enjoy:

Bhimsen Joshi:

Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav, 1985. He was singing a beautiful Todi, “Changai nainawa” followed by “Langara kankariyaa jina maaro.” Nana Muley on tabla, Purushottam Wallawalkar on harmonium.

New Delhi, ITC Sangeet Sammelan, 1985. He sang Yaman: “Kahe sakhi kaise kariye bhariye” followed by “Eri aali piya bina.” Ajoy Chakrabarty was playing harmonium.

IIRC, this was at some sort of function in Pune, honoring the tabliya Ghulam Rasool Khan. It was in the morning, and Panditji sang a very nice Lalit.

Pune, 1986

Pune, 1987

Rehearsing at Rang Bhavan with Balamurali Krishna, for that evening’s “Concert for National Integration.” February 26, 1986.

Gangubai Hangal:

Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav, 1985. Krishna Hangal is giving vocal support, Sheshgiri Hangal on tabla, Appa Jalgaonkar on harmonium. They sang a long and emotionally harrowing Asavari.

Mallikarjun Mansur:

New Delhi, ITC Sangeet Sammelan, 1985. It was a morning concert, and Buwa sang a long Yamani Bilawal, a long and utterly ravishing Jaunpuri, a Madhmad Sarang, and concluded with “Man mat maar” in Jogiya Asavari. That was the first time I’d heard him sing in person and I was completely transported.

Feroze Dastoor:

Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav, 1985. Nana Muley on tabla, Purushottam Wallawalkar on harmonium.

Malini Rajurkar:

Pune, 1986.

Kumar Gandharva:

Garware College, 1987.

Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav, Pune, 1985.

Dinkar Kaikini:

Abdul Karim Khan centennial, Miraj, 1986. He was singing Malkauns.

I figured I should get some music-related stuff up so that my tag cloud doesn’t show the words “Desperation” and “Pi**ing into the Wind” in bigger letters than everything else.
