In the Boston Herald, a report about the campaign to get uber-swine David Koch off the WGBH board of directors:<\/a><\/p>\n

Draped in a WBUR windbreaker,\u2028Lee Stewart of \u2028Jamaica Plain called Koch \u2014 who has \u2028donated $18.6 million to \u2019GBH, \u2028including $10 million to the science program \u201cNOVA\u201d \u2014 \u201ca climate \u2028denier, a polluter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis presence is extremely \u2028offensive,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cPeople who are actively fighting to destroy the climate should not have equal political voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Small and Stewart were among some 50 sign-waving activists who protested outside Channel 2\u2019s Brighton studios before presenting a petition of 119,000 online signatures calling for Koch\u2019s resignation. Among the protesters was an activist in an Elmo costume carrying a sign that read, \u201cElmo Love WGBH Elmo No Love Koch Lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

WGBH board chairman Amos Hostetter defended Koch, telling the protesters there\u2019s no \u201cpolitical litmus test\u201d for board members.<\/p>\n

\u201cDiversity is something we \u2028highly value,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not because we disagree with Mr. Koch politically,\u201d Small said. \u201cIt\u2019s because he is about the destruction of politics in America as we know it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hostetter denied that trustees have any control over programming, and the board quickly moved on to \u2028other business.<\/p>\n

The protest came just hours \u2028before \u201cNOVA\u201d aired a special on rising sea levels in the \u2028aftermath of Megastorm \u2028Sandy.<\/p>\n

A Koch spokeswoman said he had no \u201cimmediate plans\u201d to resign.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe particularly enjoys WGBH\u2019s outstanding program \u2018NOVA,\u2019 which he \u2028believes educates the public in a very entertaining way,\u201d said spokeswoman Cristyne Nicholas. \u201cAs for climate change, Mr. Koch \u2028is interested in ensuring \u2028that energy policies are \u2028informed by sound science and economic reality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But the activists said they\u2019re just getting started.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople aren\u2019t going to let this go,\u201d said Brad Johnson of Forecast the Facts. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to stop.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When his spokeswoman asserts that arch-conservative David Koch wants energy policies that are based on “sound science and economic reality,” it’s a little window into the thinking of a bazillionaire whose mindset is steeped in the McCarthy-era anti-communist hysteria of the John Birch Society.<\/p>\n

Mr. Koch probably learned to trust medical expertise over the course of his experience as a cancer patient. I wonder: if 97 oncologists diagnosed a malignancy, while 3 said more tests were needed, would he start therapy…or would he decide that “sound science” demanded a rejection of the medical consensus? <\/p>\n

Climatologists are our planetary physicians, and their diagnosis of the human causes and profound danger of climate change is overwhelmingly certain \u2014 as conclusive as the causal connection between smoking and cancer. Mr. Koch’s denialism isn’t based on sound science, and his rejection of policies that will end our dependence on fossil fuels is anything but economically realistic.<\/p>\n
